Baga Snake Description of Significance
Among the Baga people of coastal Guinea, large serpent sculptures are often associated with Bansonyi, a powerful protective spirit connected to water, fertility, and community well-being. Traditionally, these tall snake forms were not static objects but performance pieces, carried or worn during important ceremonies, including initiations, agricultural rites, and public celebrations. Their dramatic height, painted surface, and undulating form were meant to create an otherworldly presence, embodying the force of a spirit moving through the community.
