Dan Style Mask from Liberia Description of Significance
Dan masks from Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia are striking for their high rounded foreheads, round eye holes, and the red fabric stretched across the eyes. Traditionally used in initiation ceremonies and secret society performances, they were believed to channel spirits and uphold social order. Their bold, haunting look also inspired European modernists—Picasso among them—as he developed his early Cubist style.
Today, artisans still carve Dan-style masks, keeping the signature features but creating them mainly as wall art or collectibles. While true ritual masks remain rare and valuable, decorative versions make the tradition more accessible, carrying forward the dramatic beauty and cultural weight of the originals.
