Kurumba Antelope Mask from Mali Description of Significance

The Kurumba people of northern Burkina Faso traditionally created carved wooden antelope headdresses known as adoné. Worn atop the head during masquerade performances, these sculptural headdresses were accompanied by a fiber costume that concealed the wearer and helped create the appearance of a spiritual being.

Kurumba antelope headdresses played an important role in funerals, memorial ceremonies, and rites honoring ancestors and protective spirits. They could accompany the bodies of respected elders to burial and later appear in commemorative performances intended to preserve the memory and achievements of the deceased. Some were commissioned following the death of an important clan elder, reflecting and reinforcing the elder’s prestige.

The headdresses could also function as portable sacred objects upon which offerings were made to ancestors in hopes of receiving protection and blessings. When not in ceremonial use, they were traditionally kept in a family shrine or ancestral spirit house within the compound.
