Yangere Slit Drum Instrument from D.R. Congo Description of Significance
The Yangere people of the D. R. Congo carved large slit drums from a single piece of wood, often giving them the form of a horned animal such as an antelope, bush cow, or buffalo. The animal’s head, horns, legs, and tail were worked into the shape of the instrument, while a long opening in the hollowed body produced different tones when struck with wooden beaters. Although commonly called drums, they have no skin covering and are more accurately described as slit gongs.
Historically, large zoomorphic slit drums were associated with chiefs and other prominent figures. Their carrying sound allowed them to be used for music, public announcements, and coded messages sent across considerable distances. Their impressive size and powerful animal imagery also reflected the authority and status of their owners, making them both functional instruments and important sculptural objects.
