Description of Significance

This antique Tuareg ehel tent post comes from Mali. The Tuareg are a seminomadic people of the Sahara and Sahel, traditionally living in portable tents known as ehen, which were often given to a new bride by her mother and closely associated with marriage and family life.

Ehel posts were used inside the tent to support woven mats, known as eseber, around the parents’ sleeping area, creating privacy and defining the interior space. Carved from a single piece of hard wood, this post features geometric designs on both sides, reflecting both practical function and prestige within Tuareg domestic life.
