Description of Significance

This Senufo helmet mask from Côte d’Ivoire is affiliated with the tradition of noo, or bovine helmet masks. Noo masks were associated with an elite society of healers known as the nookaariga, a name referring to transformation into a wild bush-cow. According to Senufo oral tradition, the society’s founder received knowledge of healing and supernatural transformation from a mythical bush-cow, making the animal an important symbol within these masks.

Carved as powerful sculptural forms, noo masks are often distinguished by a domed head and large curving horns referencing the wild bush-cow. They belong to a broader tradition of Senufo helmet masks in which animal imagery was combined to express power, protection, and connections to the spiritual world.
