Description of Significance

The Pende people of western Democratic Republic of Congo are a matrilineal society. While they are renowned for their masks, they also create stools as a form of minor art. The stools were highly personal items, intimately connected to their owners, and were not typically transferred or traded to others. As such, they held great value and significance for the individuals for whom they were made.
