Description of Significance

Mosi O Tunia means the Smoke That Thunders. It is the name for Victoria Falls, that largest waterfall in the world.

Artist Bio: Remember Chikuruwo

Remember Chikuruwo was born into a family where he was the only boy among four sisters. His journey into stone sculpting began under the guidance of his father, Simoriro Chikuruwo, a seasoned artist and owner of the Leopard Rock Mine. Remember started assisting his father in 2006 after completing his Ordinary education, embracing the family tradition of stone sculpting alongside his mother, Tambudzai Makuyana.

Remember’s artwork is deeply rooted in spiritual themes, often depicting animals such as birds, frogs, cats, and fish, as well as natural elements like waves and flowers. His creative process is intimately connected to his early experiences as a hunter, drawing inspiration from memories of wandering through mountains and along riverbanks.

Recognized as a Fair-Trade approved artist, Remember has broadened his artistic skills through international collaboration. He participated in workshops with Danish designers at the Chitungwiza Arts Centre in 2011 and 2013, where he refined his technical drawing skills and applied them to stone sculpture, creating functional art pieces such as lights and bowls. His dedication was recognized with two certificates upon the completion of these workshops.

Remember Chikuruwo’s work has been showcased in exhibitions across the globe, including Europe, Africa, America, and Asia, earning him a place on the international stage as a distinctive voice in contemporary stone sculpture.

Country of Origin

Dimensions (inches)
  • Depth: 12"
  • Width: 18"
  • Height: 35"
Type of Stone
  • Springstone
  • Springstone comes from the Guruve mine in northern Zimbabwe. It is one of the hardest stones found in the country and has an elevated density allowing it to be polished to a bright shine. Springstone contains high deposits of iron which can sometimes be seen in a reddish-brown outer layer on the stone. The iron also makes it an incredibly hard stone to carve by hand.
  • One of the most famous 1st generation carvers, John Takawira, was said to have coined the name 'springstone' when he tried to carve the stone and it was so dense and strong that the chisel sprung off the stone, hence the name 'springstone'.
