Description of Significance for this Millet Grinding Vessel from Ivory Coast

This antique millet grinding vessel was traditionally used with a pestle to de-hull and grind pearl millet into flour for everyday meals. Made by the Baule people of Côte d’Ivoire, it reflects the importance of food preparation as both a practical and communal ritual. In many villages, pounding millet was a shared daily task, often accompanied by song, with the steady rhythmic sound of wood striking grain becoming part of the soundtrack of rural life.
