Description of Significance

The Makonde people live in southeast Tanzania and northeast Mozambique. The lipiko (helmet) masks were the most important carving of the Makonde people. African masks represented animals or ancestral spirits. In many lipiko masks, such as this one, the naturalism is greatly exaggerated. Makonde Lipiko masks often had eyebrows, lashes, and human hair.
