Lwalwa masks from the Democratic Republic of Congo were traditionally worn by men during initiation rites and hunting ceremonies, symbolizing power, masculinity, and connection to the spirit world. These Lwalwa masks are known for their bold, angular features—a prominent triangular nose, slit eyes, and a strong, geometric jawline—reflecting a highly stylized aesthetic. Crafted from wood and often stained with a rich patina, they were worn with full-body costumes during ritual dances meant to bring good fortune and communicate with ancestors. Today, Lwalwa-style masks are created mainly as decorative pieces, admired for their striking, minimalist design.
