Description of Significance

The Yoruba people of Nigeria have a remarkably high rate of twin births compared to other populations around the globe. Due to this phenomenon, twins are deemed exceptional individuals who are safeguarded by Sango, the god of thunder. Being potent spirits during their lifetime, twins receive great reverence and respect from the Yoruba community, who create carved commemorative statues called Ibeji to honor them even after they pass away.
