Grebo Mask from Liberia Description of Significance

Grebo masks come from the Grebo people of southeastern Liberia and parts of Ivory Coast. These bold, abstract masks are known for their striking features—often large, protruding eyes and multiple cylindrical forms representing power and spiritual force. Traditionally carved from wood and painted in black, white, or red, Grebo masks were worn during ceremonies to intimidate enemies, celebrate victories, or honor spirits. Their exaggerated forms symbolize strength and aggression, believed to ward off evil and embody ancestral energy. Today, their geometric, almost modernist designs continue to captivate collectors and artists around the world.
