Description of Significance
An exceptionally fine woven basket collecting in Southern Africa, made with tightly worked plant fiber over a natural gourd form. The original top of the gourd has been preserved and fitted as the lid, while the woven handle adds both function and sculptural character.
The remarkably tight weave and careful construction speak to the skill of the maker. This is a very old piece with a beautiful surface and strong presence as both a functional object and work of traditional craftsmanship.
