Description of Significance

The Ekoi people, also referred to as Ejagham, are an ethnic group located in southeastern Nigeria, with some extending eastward into the southwestern region of Cameroon.

Ekoi headdresses, including this one, are affixed to basketry caps worn on the head. These headdresses were traditionally worn for both joyous festivities and important ceremonial occasions. When a high-ranking member of society passed away, the Ekoi would hold an elaborate commemorative funeral. During such events, a skilled dancer dressed in a full-length gown would wear the headdress as a symbol of honor and respect.

The base of this headdress is made of basketry, while the wood is covered with animal skin.
