Description of Significance
A finely carved Dinka headrest from South Sudan with a beautiful, deep patina developed through age and handling. Its simple form and sculptural lines make it a particularly strong example.
Traditionally used by Dinka herders as portable pillows, headrests elevated the head while sleeping and helped protect elaborate hairstyles. They were also personal objects associated with status, often carved from a single piece of wood and carried by their owners as they moved with their cattle.
