Description of Significance:

Modern Benin bronze sculptures, created as fine art objects, continue the legacy of the historic Benin Kingdom in Nigeria. Using the traditional lost-wax casting method, contemporary artisans craft intricate sculptures that blend traditional motifs with modern themes. The process involves sculpting a wax model, encasing it in clay to create a mould, and casting the piece in molten bronze. Once cooled, the sculptures are polished, engraved, and patinated, showcasing remarkable precision and attention to detail.

A common symbol in these works is the leopard, a revered animal in Benin art and culture. Representing strength, authority, and regality, the leopard was historically associated with the Oba (king), embodying his power and divine protection. Contemporary artists often incorporate this symbolism into their sculptures to explore themes of leadership and resilience. Produced in artist studios and workshops in Edo State, particularly Benin City, these works reflect the skill and innovation of today’s artisans. Free from the controversies surrounding the historic Benin Bronzes, these modern pieces are celebrated for their craftsmanship and as a vibrant continuation of a centuries-old tradition.

About Decorative African Art:

At Hemingway Gallery, we carefully select pieces from artists and owners who meet our standards of historical and aesthetic quality. This includes newly created artworks that are actively used in ceremonies. While these pieces may lack age or antiquity, we deeply value them as authentic expressions of artistic tradition.

Our collection highlights the work of talented artisans producing fine art that draws inspiration from historic styles. We also embrace contemporary African aesthetics that may not fit traditional notions of “African” design. Our mission is to showcase the evolving creativity of Africa’s artists, moving beyond the concept of “tribal” to reflect the diversity and innovation of the continent’s artistic landscape.

Our Pricing:

Our pricing correlates directly to the asking prices of artists, artisans and art dealers in the various African countries we collect from and the costs of importing their artwork to the U.S. We need to change the idea that artists should be paid pennies for their fine art just because it comes from Africa. Paying a fair price to our artists is our number one priority and our pricing reflects that.

Shipping:

  • Subsidized U.S. FedEx Ground shipping: $45
  • Smaller pieces like this are shipped with FedEx Ground in a large box. These pieces are fragile and we take care to ensure your sculpture arrives safely. Shipping fine art is expensive, so we subsidize the cost of shipping for you.
  • A declared value is included in each shipment so a signature upon delivery is required.
  • Delivery in the New York City area is available.
  • We ship around the world! Our website is still new and is not yet processing automatic international shipping rates. Please contact us directly for custom shipping quotes outside the mainland USA (including Hawaii and Alaska).
