Baule Ram Mask from Ivory Coast Description of Significance

Baule masks, originating from the Baule people of Ivory Coast, are significant in their heritage, particularly in the context of the dance.

The ram motif represents the spirit of agriculture in Balue mythology. They are danced during mulptiple ceremonies including the harvest, royal visitors, wedding and funerals.

While traditional masks have deep symbolic meanings related to ancestors, spirits, and social roles, decorative Baule masks primarily focus on capturing the artistic cultural beauty of the historic pieces.
