Description of Significance
Historically, Bamana masks in Mali were performed in a variety of contexts, including initiation and age-grade societies as well as annual agricultural ceremonies. Animal masks could represent qualities associated with the natural world and were used in performances that communicated social values, knowledge, and community traditions. The precise meaning of a particular animal form could vary by village and generation on to their fishing skills, the Bozo are also known for their colorful puppets and masks.
