Description of Significance of this Baule Goli Glin Mask from the Ivory Coast
Baule Goli masks in the shape of an abstract buffalo are bold, circular face masks with large, curved horns and stylized features. These masks appear during Goli masquerade ceremonies, which mark funerals, festivals, or moments of social transition. Representing powerful bush spirits, they blend human and animal elements—particularly the strength and authority of the buffalo. Typically painted in red, black, or dark tones, these masks are danced in rhythmic, energetic performances that honor ancestors, ward off malevolent forces, and reinforce social harmony. Their striking form and symbolic power make them some of the most iconic in Baule art.
