Fanti Mother and Child, Ghana

Description of Significance:

The Fanti people, who belong to the Akan, inhabit the coastal region of Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast. The Fanti have matrilineal lineages and are known for their fertility and child-related sculptures. Their fertility dolls and maternity figures are particularly noteworthy.

Standing female sculptures, like the one depicted here, are a common form of Fanti art. These sculptures may sometimes include a child, but more commonly do not. The standing female figure is a ubiquitous motif in West African sculpture and has various interpretations.

In this particular example, the sculpture exudes poise, dignity, and stability. These qualities are emphasized through the artist's careful attention to detail and form. The Fanti people's emphasis on fertility and children is reflected in this sculpture's regal and maternal demeanor.
