Congo carved large slit drums from a single piece of wood, often giving them the form of a horned animal such as an antelope, bush cow, or buffalo. The animal’s head, horns, legs, and tail were worked into the shape of the instrument, while a long opening in the hollowed body produced different tones when struck with wooden beaters.
