Songye Figure, D.R. Congo
The Songye people live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They made fetish figures of varying sizes, from four inches to five feet tall. The Songye would make their figures with non-naturalistic styles. The figures are used to insure wealth and fertility and to protect people from diseases. Individuals use the smaller figures while the entire community uses the larger ones.
