The Dan people live mainly in west Côte d’Ivoire. The Dan people made masks that were the spirits of the wilderness, not just a representation. They also made “passport” masks, which were less than 8’’ and were sewn onto a cloth piece and carried with people, or worn on the small of their back. Passport masks are copies of a family mask. They act a protection for the owner when he is away from his home.
