D:5" W:8" H:26" w/base
Guru masks represent the spiritual way of life in the Guru culture. Most Guru masks represent the spirit of Gu, the wife of Zamble, a supernatural being. Birds of different kinds are often carved into the mask such as the Horn Bill or other large billed birds. These masks were commonly used during the traditional ceremonies like funerals, initiations and weddings. Today the people of Ivory Coast honor their ancestors with traditional dance and wear masks like this one to reflect past traditions.
