Priests carry crosses during worship and gospel readings and for blessing the faithful who touch the cross to their forehead or kiss it as a sign of piety. Christian worship pervades centers like Lalibela "New Jerusalem," where it is estimated that 1,000 of the 7,000 inhabitants are priests.
