Bassa Gela Mask, Liberia
Gela masks were worn only by men even though they have a soft feminine look. This mask was created to be used to protect the owner during work, travel and for defense from witchcraft. It may also have been a passport mask so the owner could identify himself in communities away from his own. The mask would have been tied to a headdress or hat and not worn directly on the face.
