Nimba Figure. Baga, Guinea
This is a high quality antique piece. The profile is traditional to the Nimba figural style. These statues do not represent a tangible person or deity. Instead, they symbolize ideas of, "beauty, comportment, righteousness, dignity, and social duty," (Lamp 1996, 163). Nimba figures like this one inspired the paintings of Pablo Picasso. Wood with metal details. Would have had attached legs that are now lost.
