Bamana Figure, Mali
D"6" W:6" H:24"
The figure could be a Flanitokele. The Bamana consider twins to be living replicas of the first two human beings created, and a source of great blessing. When a twin dies in infancy, a wooden statue may be carved to represent the deceased child, and figures for deceased female twins are given the attributes of sexually mature young women.
