Baule Fetish Figure, Ivory Coast

This fetish figure has a beautiful high patina. Ceremonial materials were applied to the head of the figure over time. The stylized female figure references scarification traditions on its torso.

Surfaces are modified from ritual use but there is no way to know the exact original use. The rough surface is the product of the frequent application of sacrificial libations. This suggests the figure may have represented nature spirits of diviner's spirits.
